Fair pricing for small farmers

  • The Buy Local Shop is our small online store that delivers fresh, in-season avocados to Perth. But we wanted to do more than just sell our own produce—so we started bringing in fruit, veg local products from our neighbors too.

Here, farmers set the price they want for their produce, rather than being forced to accept determined prices that arent sustainable. It’s a small step toward fairer, more transparent pricing for local small growers.

  • Fair pricing means paying farmers an amount that reflects the true cost of growing their food, rewards their labour, and ensures their business can survive. It’s about giving farmers a sustainable income, rather than forcing them to rely on prices set by wholesalers or large retailers.

  • The Australian Food and Grocery Code of Conduct, introduced in April 2025, was designed to prevent unfair trading practices between large retailers and farmers. It sets rules to ensure transparency and fair treatment—but it only applies to retailers with a turnover over $5 billion.

This means that smaller farmers, who sell to independent stores, markets, or direct to consumers, aren’t protected. They can still be forced to accept low prices set by wholesalers or buyers, leaving them vulnerable and often unable to cover the real costs of growing their produce.

  • We deliver to Perth approximately every three weeks during avocado season, bringing fresh, in-season fruit—and occasionally local produce from our neighbours—straight to a local pick-up point

  • We let producers set the price they want for their produce whenever possible, following their either there recommended retail price (RRP).

If a price isn’t provided, we calculate it based on costs—covering expenses like credit card fees, charitable donations, and transport—and then add a modest 15% margin. This ensures farmers are paid fairly while keeping the shop sustainable and transparent.

  • Yes! If you’re a not-for-profit organisation—like a school P&C, community group, or charity—you can become a pickup point.

We pay $1 per kg of avocados sold, or 5% of the sales of other local produce. It’s a simple way to support your community and earn funds at the same time.
